What do you think of when you hear the word ants? Perhaps they are an insect that you don’t think very much about until you open your kitchen cabinet and you see a trail of ants surrounding a crumb you forgot to clean up. Or perhaps you began to see ants in a favorable light once you viewed Disney’s The Bug’s Life. Whatever the case may be, there are things we can do to prevent ants from entering our homes during this winter season.
The winter season can wreak havoc on ants’ shelter due to the fact that their ground nest are either flooded or too cold. In the Bay Area, we typically see one of two types of ants. We see either the Argentine Ant or the Odorous Ant. Since Argentine Ants are from South America they are used to being in warmer climates. Thus, they tend to invade a home in large numbers and organized trails.
So what are some things that you can do to prevent ants from entering your home? First, make sure to clean up all your crumbs in the kitchen. Second, caulk around any openings such as windows, door frames, under sinks, etc. Finally, keep bushes and trees trimmed away from the house making sure that it is at least a couple feet away from the house.
It is possible that you may do these things and ants still enter your home regardless of your efforts. Another tip is to use a wet washcloth to sweep up any ants. Whatever the case may be, remember to never use RAID because it can actually makes the issue much worse.
We hope these tips help, but remember ATCO Pest Control is only a phone call away.
