Bed Bug Treatment in California

A woman sleeping soundly on her bed bug-free bed.

No homeowner wants to be stuck dealing with bed bugs, but ending up with an infestation is easier than you’d think. These parasitic pests can find a way into your home by latching on to clothing or hiding out in used furniture or luggage. Once inside, they’ll make themselves comfortable in your house’s cracks and crevices and inside of your mattresses and furniture, making it hard to spot them until you wake up covered in bites!

Why is Heat Treatment the Best Option for Bed Bug Removal?

When pest management professionals began treating for bed bugs, it was originally through harsh chemicals and gases. These products are extremely dangerous for your family and loved ones. These treatments typically require 2-3 visits, and you have to wait until the products have dried before re-entering your home. At ATCO, we understand this is not ideal and only causes more stress, which is why we've become the local experts in heat treatment for bed bugs—our president, Richard Estrada, even gives talks at NPMA on heat treatments!

How does heat treatment for bed bug removal work?

  • We raise the temperature in your house to 130 degrees using Eradi-Flo.
  • Bed bugs and their eggs cannot live about 118 degrees, so after about 90 minutes of the heat treatments, exterminators begin to see results.
  • Treatments take anywhere from 6-8 hours depending on the house size.
  • There are no residual effects left on your furniture, carpet, walls, etc., meaning that you can enter your home once the temperature is cooled down.

Identifying Signs of Bed Bugs

With adults growing no bigger than an apple seed, it can be hard to spot bed bugs. Many companies rely on trained bed-bug sniffing dogs to find these pests, but our ATCO-trained professional bed bug exterminator can help you identify the calling cards. When in doubt, always call a professional! However, if you’ve noticed any of the following, you may be dealing with a bed bug infestation:

  • A musty odor coming from bedsheets.
  • Blood spots on your pillows or blankets.
  • Itchy red bumps on your body.
  • Rust-colored spots of fecal matter in your bed.

Travel Tips to Prevent Bed Bugs

Everyone knows that the most common ways for bed bugs to come home with you is by traveling often. This means that the more often you travel, the more likely you are to find bed bugs in your home. No fear! There are ways to prevent bed bugs during traveling. Here are a few travel tips to prevent bed bugs:

  • Pull back the comforter and sheets and inspect the sheets for “blood spots.” These can look like tiny, dark red to black or brown spots or multi-pointed stars on a white sheet and mattress.
  • Look in the seams of a mattress and bed frames. Bed bugs are quite visible to the naked-eye. Adults are roughly the same size and shape of an apple seed and have a light to dark red or rust coloring. Young nymphs having a translucent gold or amber color.
  • If you can, DO NOT use the drawers in hotel rooms to place your clothes—use metal hangers in the closets. DO NOT place your luggage or bags on the floor or bed—put them in the bathroom and on the luggage rack provided.
  • If you find evidence of bed bugs, inform management immediately.
  • When returning home, always inspect your clothes and luggage. Wash and dry all clothing, even clothes you didn’t wear. Vacuum your bags and luggage if you suspect bed bug presence
