Local Wasp and Bee Control

Bee Removal that Protects the Ecosystem
At ATCO, our priority is to not only keep you safe from pests but to protect the environment. This is why we refer a beekeeper if requested by the customer. Sometimes the beekeeper is not able to extract the queen and/or the honeycomb and thereby the nest or beehive, so we do have to go in and get rid of them. In those cases, we hook up a vacuum to the entry/exit points and remove them in that manner versus using an insecticide. Once we’ve captured most of them in a vacuum, we’ll remove the nest from the wall and seal up the area if we can.

Sudden oak death isn’t all that sudden—it is caused by the pathogen Phytophthora Ramorum, which lives and moves in water. It has over 50 different host plants that carry it and ultimately transmit it to oak trees. The most common true oaks that are affected by it are live oaks, white oaks, and tan oaks. We can prolong tree life through treatment, and if the tree does not have the pathogen, we can prevent it from getting it by doing treatments. We cannot reverse the effects of a tree once it’s been infected.
We use a combination of a product called Agri-Fos, which is just basically a salt fertilizer, and a penetrant, Penta-Bark, which allows the tree to be able to absorb the material into its system and spread it throughout the tree. We spray the bark the first 10-12 feet around the base of the tree, but we also can inject the tree with phosphite, which is the active ingredient in Agri-Fos, so there’s no spraying involved whenever we do that.
Pigeons, also known as “flying rats,” cause millions of dollars of damage to buildings every year. Pigeons do one of two things: they either roost or they nest. We get a lot of calls from building owners, and the first thing we need to know is whether they are roosting or nesting, as the methodologies needed for remediation are different. If pigeons are roosting, we use different products to keep them off of the ledge than we would if they are nesting in an area. If the pigeons are nesting, we use Bird Barrier products for remediation.
Bats, like spiders, are also pest control partners, but they can be a nuisance with the smell of bat guano, and even somewhat dangerous if they’ve become a tenant in your residence. ATCO provides an exclusionary service where we seal the area or the areas leading up their nest using a bat cone. They come out of the cone, but then when they return, they can’t get back in. We leave that up for some time and then we remove the cone and seal the opening. We are prohibited from performing this service during the bats’ maternity period from June 1 to August 15. Bats are very beneficial out in the landscape, where they consume enormous amounts of mosquitoes and other insects, but you don’t want to encourage or allow them to come inside.
